Area Information: The Adirondack mountain range is located in the northeastern part of New York State. The Adirondack Mountains are within the 6 million acres of Adirondack Park. There are over one hundred summits, ranging from under 1200 to over 5000 feet. Niagara Falls is undoubtedly the most famous attraction in Western New York. The Niagara Falls are renowned both for their beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Located on the Niagra River, straddling the border of Canada, has 3 drops. Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Falls. The oldest and best known tourist attraction at Niagara Falls is the Maid of the Mist boat cruise. The Finger Lakes region is the second largest wine producing area in the United States (Napa Valley in California being first). Today the Finger Lakes area is still known for fishing and hunting. Winter sports are also popular, with skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing available. The Erie Canal (currently part of the New York State Canal System) is a canal in New York State, that runs from the Hudson River to Lake Erie, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The Erie Canal made boom towns of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Rome, Utica and Schenectady and made an immense contribution to the wealth and importance of New York City and New York state. Its impact went much further, increasing trade throughout the nation by opening eastern and overseas markets to Midwest farm products and encouraging western immigration. |
